About the Role
Hertfordshire’s network of Public Footpaths, Bridleways and Byways plays a vital role in helping people enjoy the outdoors, travel actively and feel connected to their local area. The Countryside & Rights of Way Access Team is responsible for maintaining this network, working closely with local communities and landowners to keep routes open, safe and welcoming.
This varied, hands-on role combines outdoor work with collaborative problem-solving. You will inspect fault reports and issues on the network, engage with landowners, support volunteer teams and respond to public enquiries.
Key duties include:
- Inspecting Public Rights of Way fault reports and identifying maintenance or accessibility needs
- Specifying, procuring and overseeing contractor works
- Working constructively with landowners to resolve access issues and agree improvements
- Supporting volunteers and community groups caring for local paths
- Handling public enquiries in a helpful and customer-focused manner
- Responding to planning consultations to protect and improve access to the network
You will be part of the wider Countryside & Rights of Way Service, collaborating with colleagues in Definitive Map, Commons & Village Greens, Community Engagement and other specialist teams.

Experience
- Experience working with Public Rights of Way, countryside access or land management
- Practical knowledge of Public Rights of Way legislation
- Proven track record of positive engagement with landowners, volunteers and the public

- Ability to organise your own work and manage a varied workload
- Enthusiastic about working outdoors and engaging with communities
Qualifications
- Full manual driving licence is essential due to travel requirements across Hertfordshire
