About the Role
The post holder will be employed primarily to work within their core skills focusing on building and engineering plant and equipment maintenance. They will progressively receive training to develop multi-trade flexibility and competence, enabling them to apply their skills across a broader range of tasks. The role requires undertaking Authorised Persons Training in at least one of the following operational areas: LV, Medical Gas, HVAC, Decontamination, Pressure Systems, Water Safety, or Lifts. A full valid driving licence is essential as driving duties are required.

Key responsibilities include fault diagnosis and analysis of complex critical equipment and systems, applying cause and effect analysis to identify solutions and carry out repairs safely and effectively. The role involves problem solving technical issues, assessing safety situations, and organising complex maintenance and testing programmes for a wide variety of healthcare systems.

The post holder will liaise with specialist contractors, departmental managers, and in-house Estates Officers to coordinate work activities. They must be prepared to work overtime for emergency repairs, planned maintenance, and operating theatre closures.

Precision and accuracy are essential, requiring skills in using fine tools for adjustments, calibration of instruments, and interpreting complex engineering drawings and manuals. The role involves utilising sophisticated calibration and monitoring instruments to obtain and record test results in compliance with quality assurance standards and NHS Technical Memorandum requirements.

The post holder will identify, procure, and replace defective components on major engineering plant cost-effectively up to a value of £2,000. A multi-skilled approach is required to undertake a wide range of tasks safely and in compliance with relevant legislation and departmental procedures.

Core Mechanical Responsibilities include maintenance of hot and cold water systems, plumbing, steam boilers, heating systems, ventilation, hydrotherapy pools, compressed air systems, site transport vehicles, and compliance with legionella and water regulations.

Core Electrical Responsibilities include maintenance of standby generators, uninterruptable power supplies, emergency lighting, low voltage installations, ventilation and air-conditioning systems, building management systems, refrigeration, fire alarms, nurse call systems, lifts, catering and laundry equipment, security access control, intruder alarms, and CCTV systems.

Core Building Responsibilities include maintenance of fire doors and closers, locks (digital and electronic), building fabric (roofs and walls), fire stopping, roads, footpaths, and external drainage.

The role also involves undertaking regular Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) on a wide variety of building and engineering services plant and equipment, recording and analysing results, and providing condition and non-compliance reports as necessary.

Requirements

Experience
Proven experience in fault diagnosis and repair of complex critical equipment and systems within a mechanical or multi-trade environment. Experience working with healthcare or similar technical systems is highly desirable.

Qualifications
Relevant mechanical or multi-trade qualifications preferred. Authorised Persons Training will be provided as required. Compliance with NHS Technical Memorandum standards and Estates Department safe working procedures is essential.
