About the Role
This is a new strategic vision role created to support the national NHS Green Plan and Net-Zero agenda. The post holder will act as the specialist lead responsible for developing and driving forward the Trust’s Energy Management and buildings decarbonisation in line with NHS Sustainability, Net-Zero, and the Trust’s Estates and Facilities Strategies. The role requires bringing specialist skills and expertise to improve the Trust’s buildings energy performance, meet local and national energy saving and carbon reduction targets, and ensure the cost-effective purchase of utility supplies. This supports the Trust’s Estates operations and energy budget, contributing to the achievement of Living Within Our Means cost saving targets.
The postholder will lead complex Estates energy-related operations, applying strong skills and judgement to integrate the Trust’s energy efficiency, energy management, and decarbonisation (Net-zero Sustainability) objectives focused on optimising the effectiveness of the Trust Estate. The role involves liaising with a wide variety of Trust staff at all levels and external organisations, providing specialist knowledge to ensure effective service delivery related to environment, energy, and sustainability within Trust Policies, Procedures, and Service Level Agreements. Close collaboration with the Sustainability Manager and Heads of Estates Development and Facilities is essential to ensure a cohesive approach to energy management and decarbonisation.
Key responsibilities include:
- Taking strategic lead on Estate energy management, utilities, and waste
- Reviewing and overseeing all sub-metering arrangements, energy contracts, costs, energy use, decarbonisation initiatives, and funding to deliver improved energy efficiency, cost savings, and carbon reduction
- Developing and delivering systems to manage, monitor, and report Estates performance regarding Trust buildings’ energy and utilities, involving complex technical analysis and forecasting consumption and prices for commercial contracts
- Managing all contracts and finances associated with energy, utilities, patient transport, transport, and waste management
- Researching and developing projects to secure external capital funding to help meet Trust decarbonisation and carbon reduction targets

Experience
Proven experience in energy management, estates operations, or related fields with a strong understanding of energy efficiency, decarbonisation, and sustainability within large organisations, preferably within the NHS or public sector.
About you
Strategic thinker with excellent judgement and leadership skills. Ability to liaise effectively with a wide range of stakeholders at all levels. Strong analytical skills to manage complex technical data and financial contracts. Committed to driving sustainability and cost-saving initiatives. Collaborative team player able to work closely with Sustainability Managers and Estates teams.
Qualifications
Relevant professional qualifications in energy management, environmental science, engineering, or related disciplines are desirable. Evidence of continuous professional development in sustainability, energy efficiency, or estates management is advantageous.
