About the Role
This is a non-operational instructional role based within the Waste Management unit at HMP Pentonville. The post holder will be responsible for managing the day-to-day activities of waste collection, processing, and disposal within the establishment, ensuring compliance with legislative and environmental standards. Key duties include overseeing the shredding and bailing of confidential waste, liaising with contractors for waste removal services, and maintaining accurate records of waste removed from site including weight, cost, and revenue. The role involves delivering training and accredited qualifications to prisoners, maintaining training records, and applying the Waste Hierarchy to promote recycling and effective waste management across the prison. The post holder will also manage waste permits and exemptions, ensure compliance with waste legislation, and provide advice to staff and senior management on waste management practices. Additional responsibilities include workshop administration, prisoner induction and training, supervising prisoner performance and discipline, maintaining workshop security and health and safety standards, and contributing to prisoner reports and regime monitoring. This role requires effective communication, adherence to security protocols, and active participation in promoting a whole prison approach to waste management aligned with the Ministry of Justice Circular Economy Strategy.
Experience
- Relevant work experience in a waste management environment is essential
- Preferably some supervisory experience
- Experience using industrial standard machinery and equipment

Qualifications
- Currently hold or be willing to work towards a Level 3 qualification or equivalent in a waste-related subject
- Demonstrated knowledge of the Waste Hierarchy and Duty of Care including Waste Transfer Notes
- Understanding of Waste Permits and Exemptions and adherence to relevant government regulations
- Basic IT skills, maths and English proficiency
