About the course

The City & Guilds 2357 NVQ Level 3 Electrical Installation / Maintenance is a work-based qualification designed for people who have already completed their electrical training and need to demonstrate their competence in the workplace.

Unlike a traditional classroom course, the NVQ is primarily an assessment of occupational competence. Learners build a portfolio of evidence based on electrical installation work they carry out on site.

Activate uses an electronic portfolio system, allowing evidence to be uploaded online and enabling assessment for learners working across the UK.

The qualification, together with the required AM2 assessment, is a key route towards being recognised as a qualified electrician and can support progression towards ECS Gold Card status, subject to the applicable requirements.

Assessment

The NVQ is assessed through workplace evidence and competency assessment.

The learner builds a portfolio demonstrating that they can perform the required electrical installation activities competently.

Final assessment

The final stage includes the AM2 (Assessment of Occupational Competence).

The AM2 is a practical industry trade assessment covering activities such as:

  • Installing
  • Terminating
  • Connecting
  • Inspecting
  • Testing
  • Commissioning
  • Fault diagnosis

The AM2 is a mandatory part of completing the qualification, but it is booked separately and is not included in the Activate course price.

Entry Requirements

This is not a beginner course.

The course is intended for learners who have already completed relevant electrical diplomas, particularly:

  • City & Guilds 2330, or
  • City & Guilds 2365 Level 2 and/or Level 3

Learners must also be working within the electrical industry and have access to suitable electrical installation work from which they can build their workplace portfolio.

CMS entry requirement

Existing electrical qualifications and current employment/work experience within the electrical industry.
