About the course

This course is suitable for candidates who want to work as electricians in the building services engineering sector.
You will learn, develop, and practise the skills required for employment and career progression in the Refrigeration and Air Conditioning (RAC) sector. The course covers a range of practical techniques required for the industry, alongside electrical technology and scientific principles.

Units covered include:
Health and safety in building services engineering
Scientific principles within RAC and heat pump (HP) systems
Applying scientific principles to practical vapour compression systems
Functions and features of RAC and HP systems
Servicing and maintaining RAC and HP systems
Installing and commissioning RAC and HP systems
Electrical systems for RAC and HP systems
Handling fluorinated gases and ozone-depleting substances
Category I Personnel certification
Effective communication within building services engineering

How is the course taught?
You will be taught through practical application in workshops and theory sessions in the classroom.

Qualified tutors provide guidance in classrooms and workshops, supporting your development of industry-relevant skills and techniques. Learning support is available for those with learning difficulties or disabilities—please indicate this on your application if required. What social activities can I take part in?
A programme of social and sports activities is offered to all students. Student rooms are available for relaxation, socialising, and gaming.

What facilities and resources are available?
Canteen and café facilities offer a range of snacks, hot and cold foods, and vending machines. Halal meat and washing facilities are available at both centres. Quiet Rooms are provided for reflection. Learning Resource Centres (LRCs) at both centres are fully equipped with extensive learning materials and staffed by friendly, qualified personnel.

Students may participate in national and regional competitions to showcase their skills. Competition entry is optional and may not apply to all subject areas—please consult your tutor for details.

Qualification awarded
On successful completion, you will receive a Level 2 Diploma in Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning.

Assessment
Assessment is ongoing through online exams and practical trade tests.

Duration and location
This course runs for 36 weeks at the Willesden Campus.

Entry Requirements

Entry Requirements
You will need GCSE grades A to C in Maths and English or an equivalent Level 2 functional skill. If you cannot provide evidence of your English and Maths qualifications, you will be required to complete an online assessment after submitting your application. You may also be asked to complete a piece of free writing or a vocational assessment. Successful applicants will be invited to an interview with a tutor to discuss the course.
