About the Role
Help drive cleaner air, protect public health and create a greener future for everyone in our borough. As an Air Quality Officer at the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, you'll play a vital role in tackling one of the borough's biggest environmental challenges. By improving air quality, you'll directly contribute to better public health, stronger communities and a fairer, more sustainable borough for generations to come.
You'll be based in the borough for a minimum of three days a week, playing a key role in serving the local community. You will be part of a dedicated team focused on improving air and land quality, making a real difference to residents' lives and the environment.
Your day-to-day responsibilities will include reviewing planning applications and dust management plans to ensure impacts on air quality are identified and developments remain air quality neutral or positive. You will monitor air quality across Kensington and Chelsea, overseeing the operation and maintenance of the borough-wide air quality network, which includes five automatic monitoring stations and multiple mobile sensors.
Your role involves analysing complex environmental data, identifying trends and reporting progress against statutory targets and World Health Organisation guidelines. You will translate technical findings into clear, actionable insights that inform internal strategy and public reporting.
You will help deliver key actions from the Council's Air Quality Action Plan, collaborating across departments to embed best practices and reduce pollution. Additional duties include overseeing the inspection and permitting of small industrial processes under the Environmental Permitting Regulations, coordinating the monthly diffusion tube monitoring programme, and maintaining accurate records and reports.
This is a hands-on, practical role where you will use your technical knowledge and problem-solving skills to make measurable progress toward cleaner air—one dataset, inspection and policy review at a time.
Interviews will be held in person at Kensington Town Hall on Monday 1st or Tuesday 2nd December 2025. This is a two-year fixed-term contract.
