About the Role
Shape the future of nature in Nottingham, a city of green ambition committed to protecting and enhancing its natural environment. As the Biodiversity & Greenspace Policy Officer, you will lead the integration of biodiversity into local planning, projects, and policy. Your work will support the delivery of Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG), nature recovery strategies, and the creation of greener, healthier communities across Nottingham. This role involves making real-world ecological change happen in one of the UK’s most forward-thinking urban environments.
You will act as the Council’s lead technical expert on ecology, biodiversity, and the Environment Act 2021. Responsibilities include providing expert advice on planning, policy, and strategic projects; leading the implementation of Biodiversity Net Gain, including advising on planning applications and applying DEFRA’s statutory metrics; supporting the Local Nature Recovery Strategy and Nottingham’s wider ecological ambitions; contributing to city-wide green infrastructure and the “Greener, Healthier, Happier” greenspace strategy; overseeing and advising on designated wildlife sites and promoting nature-led site management; writing guidance and policy documents; and collaborating across departments and with community groups to champion biodiversity for all.

Experience
Proven experience advising on planning applications, strategic plans, and site management related to ecology and biodiversity.
Technical credibility and influence in multi-disciplinary settings.
Familiarity with biodiversity legislation and policy, especially Biodiversity Net Gain and the Environment Act 2021.
Experience working with GIS, mapping, and monitoring tools.
