About the Role
Southwark Council has declared a climate emergency and is committed to transforming the council and borough to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030. The council aims to lead by example by cutting its own carbon footprint across leisure centres, libraries, civic and council buildings, targeting a 50% reduction in emissions from operational buildings by 2026 and full carbon neutrality by 2030.
As Climate Change & Retrofit Project Manager, you will lead a fast-moving, multi-million-pound investment programme to decarbonise leisure centres, identify and shape future retrofit schemes across civic buildings and the wider estate, and help secure associated funding. You will collaborate with technical advisors, contractors, cross-service teams, and key stakeholders to ensure successful, high-quality delivery.
Your responsibilities will include contract management, technical design review, procurement, on-site delivery, project monitoring and evaluation, risk management and resolution, and achieving and monitoring carbon savings.
Working within Southwark’s climate change division, you will be part of a small, dynamic team delivering one of the council’s top priorities, supported by a multi-disciplinary programme board and working groups overseeing the operational retrofit strategy.
This is an initial 12-month contract with potential for extension subject to business needs and performance. The role has arisen following an internal promotion and requires a capable individual to join as soon as possible to support this critical phase of the programme.
Experience
Proven experience in project management, ideally within retrofit, sustainability or construction sectors. Experience managing multi-million-pound projects and working with diverse stakeholders is essential.
About you
You are an enthusiastic and experienced project manager with a passion for climate action and sustainability. You thrive in dynamic, cross-council teams and are committed to delivering high-quality outcomes. You value diversity and inclusion and are motivated to contribute positively to Southwark’s culture and climate goals.
Qualifications
Relevant professional qualifications in project management, sustainability, engineering, or related fields are desirable but not mandatory. A strong track record of delivering complex projects and managing technical and contractual aspects is critical.
