About the Role
Join Cornwall Wildlife Trust's enforcement team to help manage fisheries in the inshore waters around Cornwall. In this varied role, you will work as part of a small team of enforcement officers carrying out compliance and enforcement of fisheries and marine environmental legislation throughout Cornwall. The role involves working at sea on fisheries patrol vessels and ashore visiting ports and premises. As a warranted officer, you will conduct inspections of fish and shellfish catches, fishing gear, vessels, and relevant documentation. Some tasks are physically demanding and include boarding fishing vessels at sea and acting as a crew member or coxswain of a RIB and other small workboats, subject to training and qualification. You will gather evidence, interview individuals, and produce witness statements related to suspected fisheries offences, playing a significant role in preparing prosecution case files. Effective communication and the ability to deal tactfully with challenging behaviour are essential for success in this role.
Experience
Some knowledge of commercial and recreational fishing and its regulation is advantageous but not essential as comprehensive training will be provided.
About you
You must be physically fit, able to hold an ENG1 medical certificate, and possess a full UK driving licence. Excellent interpersonal skills and confidence to communicate and work alongside a wide range of people in often challenging circumstances are essential. You will assist in investigations and enforcement actions and, with training, be expected to lead inspections and investigations.
Qualifications
Successful candidates will receive training to obtain an inshore fisheries and conservation officer (IFCO) warrant. This position is subject to a criminal record disclosure check.
