About the Role
Thames21 is an environmental charity working across London and the Thames Basin to deliver nature-based solutions to the climate and biodiversity crisis by restoring rivers and connecting communities to their local green-blue spaces. We are seeking a skilled Engagement Officer to deliver an innovative programme of community-led river engagement activities as part of the National Lottery Heritage Funded project, ‘The Roding Rises’. This role involves engaging with diverse groups from urban and rural areas of the River Roding catchment to co-design activities that support the project’s activity plan and encourage participants along an engagement pathway from awareness to participation and independent action.
The successful candidate will connect with and bring people together, building strong networks of grassroots organisations, community leaders, and representatives from public and private sectors including councillors and politicians. Curiosity and an interest in people are key values for this role, alongside the ability to listen, ask questions, and encourage involvement in ways that suit individuals and communities.
A typical day may include monitoring activities across the Roding catchment, meeting key partners, attending network meetings, delivering community events, working from home or Thames21 offices in Bow or Guildhall, co-producing engagement events, managing social media and web updates, and contributing to strategic long-term planning. This role offers the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in diverse London communities and foster positive, ongoing relationships between Londoners and their waterways.
Thames21 values diversity and inclusion and encourages applications from people of all backgrounds. While an interest in environmental issues is essential, prior experience in the environmental sector is not required as this role focuses primarily on community engagement.
Experience
Experience working with diverse communities and groups is desirable but not essential. The role requires strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build and maintain networks across a wide range of stakeholders.
About you
Curious and interested in people, with excellent communication and listening skills. Able to engage and encourage participation from individuals and communities with diverse backgrounds and life experiences. Motivated to work collaboratively and co-produce inclusive, culturally relevant programmes. Comfortable working independently and as part of a team in varied environments including offices, community settings, and outdoors.
Ability to manage multiple tasks, maintain accurate records, and work with digital tools such as CRM systems and social media platforms.
Commitment to diversity, inclusion, and community empowerment.
Qualifications
No specific qualifications are required. A positive attitude, willingness to learn, and an interest in environmental and community engagement issues are essential.
