Environmental Crime Enforcement Officer

Location
Folkestone Road Depot, London Borough of Newham
Hours
Full Time
Salary
£41,133 - £43,680 per annum
About the Role
Newham is an aspirational inner-city borough with great potential and a clear vision based on building wealth within the community. Proud to be one of the youngest and most diverse boroughs in the UK, 72% of our residents are from ethnically diverse communities, speaking over 220 languages. Home to the Olympic Park, the London Stadium and other iconic landmarks, we are the fastest growing authority in the country with a population set to rise to over 370,000 by 2023. The borough was also hit hard by the Covid-19 pandemic, highlighting long-term inequalities arising from economic disadvantage, multi-generational homes, underlying health issues and poor air quality.
As an Enforcement Officer, you will undertake enforcement activity to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour across the Borough. The role is challenging and rewarding, responding to requests and expectations for a cleaner and safer environment where residents choose to live, work and stay. Proactive patrols are conducted on foot, cycle or motor vehicle, carrying out investigations and enforcement action for breaches of relevant criminal legislation.
You will work directly with the Police, partner organisations and other council officers including those from Environmental Services, Youth Services, Planning Enforcement, Highways, Cleansing and Housing. The overarching aim is enforcement, problem solving, behavioural change and community engagement.
Experience
Experience of enforcement or regulatory work is useful but not essential. A comprehensive training programme and mentoring during probation will be provided.
About you
Excellent communication skills and a strong desire to improve the Borough’s environment for residents and businesses are essential. You must be able to patrol alone and work effectively as part of a team. The role involves problem solving investigations, reassurance patrols and participation in multi-agency operations. You may face potentially confrontational situations and must be able to resolve these confidently, professionally and with understanding, maintaining high ethical standards.
You will be working outdoors in all weather conditions for extended periods on foot, vehicle and cycle. You must possess a full (manual) current driving licence and be able to pass the Council’s driving test. You will also need to use a range of technology including smartphones, radios and body worn cameras, with training provided for all equipment and in-house computer systems.
Qualifications
No specific qualifications are required for this role, but a willingness to learn and develop through training is essential.
