About the Role

As part of our growing and agile Environmental Planning team, we are seeking a Principal/Associate Technical Director with a strong track record in leading environmental and consenting aspects of projects, particularly within the Design and Build sector.
In this role, you will contribute to improving quality of life by applying your expertise in environmental management, technical or sustainability disciplines. Your work may involve protected species, pollution control, surface water and materials management, air quality, or noise, often in some of the world's busiest and most beautiful locations. You will help protect natural environments and water resources while supporting sustainable development for future generations.
You will work on a diverse portfolio including large-scale energy and infrastructure projects, rail, highways, water, mixed-use developments, public realm, and masterplanning schemes for both private and public clients. You will lead multidisciplinary teams to deliver optimal environmental and planning outcomes, with a strong understanding of the Design and Build process. The role requires driving technical excellence, fostering a flexible and collaborative environment, and leveraging digital innovation.
Key responsibilities include leading coordination and delivery of planning and environmental work, influencing project development, creating and winning new business opportunities, engaging with clients and stakeholders, managing project performance across technical, quality, commercial, and health and safety aspects, and collaborating with colleagues across Arcadis’ global business.
Experience
- Excellent working knowledge of environmental and consenting processes, including EIA practices, procedures, and relevant case law
- Strong understanding of environmental and sustainability principles and technical specialisms
- Proven experience working with contractors and influencing sustainability through design
- Experience across a range of project types including large-scale infrastructure and mixed-use developments
- Strong report writing, verbal communication, and presentation skills, with experience reviewing others’ work to ensure quality
- Demonstrated ability in multi-disciplinary coordination, leadership, project management, and technical delivery
- Experience consulting and negotiating with planning authorities, regulators, and stakeholders
- Commercial expertise including forecasting, project management, and quality assurance
