About the Role
The successful candidate will work across a wide portfolio of projects within Crawford's Environmental Consulting team, providing environmental and sustainability services and advice. Key service areas include spill and pollution management, contamination assessment and remediation, ecology and biodiversity, environmental and ESG due diligence, environmental management and auditing, climate change mitigation and resilience, green finance and ESG, circular economy and sustainable procurement, impact assessment, life cycle assessment, sustainable organisations and social sustainability, and environmental policy and insights. In addition to consulting, you may support Specialist Loss Adjusting Services and Environmental Liability - Risk Engineering related to underwriting and insurance broker services.

Clients span multiple sectors and geographies, primarily UK-based with potential international travel opportunities as the business expands. You will engage with directors, principals, team members, clients, and prospective clients, reporting to a senior line manager aligned with your expertise.

As a Principal Consultant, you will leverage extensive industry experience to manage complex projects, provide high-level technical guidance, lead large-scale teams, and contribute to business growth. Your role will involve stakeholder engagement including regulators, legal teams, and other key parties on complex environmental matters. You will play a fundamental role in daily consulting team activities, ensuring quality and compliance, managing financial and commercial risks, and supporting staff training and coaching.

Requirements

Experience
- Ideally more than ten years of relevant full-time experience in environmental consultancy.
- Significant responsibility for direction, management, and delivery of complex, high-value, and strategic projects including multi-sector and multi-territory engagements.
- Proven ability to manage teams and lead business development initiatives.
- Experience engaging with regulators, stakeholders, and legal teams on complex environmental issues.

Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline, with professional and academic qualifications at Level 7 or equivalent.
- Post-chartership and/or membership of a relevant professional institution is expected.
- Excellent IT skills, including bespoke and proprietary modelling tools.
- Strong report writing, technical review, and quality assurance capabilities.
- Advanced data research, collection, and analysis skills.
- Deep technical knowledge across relevant specialist areas.
- Comprehensive understanding of environmental risks, regulatory frameworks, and emerging issues.

Desirable
- Experience in strategic leadership, long-term business strategy, and technical capability development.
- High-level regulatory engagement and acting as expert liaison with government, legal teams, and policy-makers.
- Experience providing technical evidence in environmental legal cases or supporting planning applications.
- Track record of speaking at conferences, publishing technical papers, and contributing to regulatory guidance.
- Proven ability to develop and implement innovative services in remediation and sustainability.
- Successful leadership of business development initiatives securing high-value contracts and partnerships.
