About the Role
The successful candidate will work across a wide portfolio of projects within Crawford's Environmental Consulting team, providing expert environmental and sustainability services and advice. Key consulting service areas include spill and pollution management, contamination assessment and remediation, ecology and biodiversity, environmental and ESG due diligence, environmental management and auditing, climate change mitigation and resilience, green finance and ESG, circular economy and sustainable procurement, impact assessment, life cycle assessment, sustainable organisations and social sustainability, and environmental policy and insights.
In addition to consulting, you may support Specialist Loss Adjusting Services (environmental adjusting) and Environmental Liability - Risk Engineering (underwriter and insurance broker services). While most work is UK-based, there may be opportunities for overseas travel as the business expands.
You will engage with directors, principals, team members, clients, and prospective clients, reporting to a senior line manager relevant to your expertise. Your role will be fundamental to the consulting team’s day-to-day activities and delivery of client outputs, including leading large-scale projects, managing teams, and contributing to business growth. You will provide high-level technical guidance, strategic input, and may deliver training or coaching to staff.
Responsibilities also include assuring compliance and quality through business processes, managing financial, commercial, and other business risks. Crawford supports professional development and expects consultants to progress within the company according to their abilities. As a subject matter expert, you will contribute to the professional development of staff and the wider profession.
Experience
- Ideally more than ten years of relevant full-time experience in environmental consultancy.
- Significant responsibility for direction, management, and delivery of complex, high-value, strategic projects including multi-sector and multi-territory assignments.
- Proven ability to lead large teams and manage business development.
- Experience engaging with regulators, stakeholders, and legal teams on complex environmental issues.
- Excellent report writing, technical review, and quality assurance skills.
- Strong data research, collection, and analysis capabilities.
- Experience managing financial and commercial risks.

Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline.
- Likely to hold professional and academic qualifications at Level 7 or above.
- Post-chartership and/or membership of a relevant professional institution.
- Excellent IT skills including use of bespoke and proprietary models.
- Deep technical knowledge across relevant specialist areas.
- Comprehensive understanding of environmental risks, regulatory frameworks, and emerging issues.
Desirable
- Experience in strategic leadership, setting long-term business strategy, and developing technical capabilities.
- High-level regulatory engagement including liaison with government bodies, legal teams, and policy-makers.
- Experience providing technical evidence in environmental legal cases or supporting planning applications.
- Track record of speaking at conferences, publishing technical papers, and contributing to regulatory guidance.
- Proven ability to develop and implement new services, drive innovation in remediation and sustainability.
- Successful leadership of business development initiatives securing high-value contracts and partnerships.
