About the Role
Own your career and build something to be proud of at Balfour Beatty. Join our Highways team as an Environmental Sustainability Manager on the RIP Mottram Moor Link Road & A57 Link Road project, working alongside true experts who will share their knowledge, provide support, encouragement, and invaluable feedback to ensure continuous learning and development. You will promote a positive environmental culture through proactive engagement and communication with project teams, supply chain, clients, and statutory bodies. Your responsibilities will include maintaining and updating environmental plans and procedures such as the Environmental Management Plan (EMP), approving relevant documents (CEMP, method statements) in consultation with the National Highways Project Manager and statutory bodies, and appointing, training, and monitoring the performance of Environmental Advisors, Ecological Clerks of Works, Environmental Management Representatives, and Sustainability Coordinators.
You will act as the primary contact between regulatory authorities (Environment Agency, Natural England, Heritage England, Local Authorities) and third-party consultees on site-based issues. You will coordinate and undertake regular site inspections with construction teams to monitor compliance with environmental licences, consents, and plans, implementing corrective actions to ensure adherence to UK regulations and legislation. Investigating environmental incidents and near misses in line with Balfour Beatty standards to identify and share lessons learned will be a key part of your role. Additionally, you will keep detailed records of site activities, environmental issues, transgressions, and tasks undertaken, providing professional and practical advice to contractors, consultants, and project team members on environmental and ecological matters.
You will also undertake risk assessments and review work package plans to ensure suitability and compliance with company requirements, applying these standards to both direct and subcontracted works.
