About the Role
Solent University is seeking an experienced Estates Mechanical Engineer to join our Estates team. In this pivotal role, you will lead the management of the University’s mechanical building services and associated team, with specific responsibility for the Building Energy Management System (BEMS). You will oversee maintenance, remedial, and refurbishment works across all mechanical systems—ensuring compliance with statutory requirements, regulations, and codes of practice. You will also provide technical expertise and minor design input across domestic water systems, heating systems, and HVAC infrastructure. Your work will directly contribute to creating a safe, efficient, and comfortable environment for students, staff, and visitors.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and develop the mechanical engineering team, ensuring effective performance and professional growth
- Actively contribute to the Technical Services Senior Leadership Team (SLT), supporting strategic decision-making
- Manage workflow, priorities, and performance for direct reports, including leave, absences, and PDRs
- Liaise with university stakeholders, contractors, and external agencies to coordinate works and ensure service excellence
- Provide effective control and regulation of heating, cooling, and associated mechanical services
- Take full ownership of the BEMS, including operational decisions and system optimisation
- Collaborate with the Estates FM Systems Manager to provide expert guidance on BEMS functionality
- Troubleshoot and resolve issues identified through BEMS fault and performance reporting systems

Experience
Proven experience in managing mechanical building services and teams, with a strong understanding of Building Energy Management Systems (BEMS). Experience in maintenance, remedial, and refurbishment works of mechanical systems in compliance with statutory requirements and codes of practice.

Qualifications
Relevant technical qualifications in mechanical engineering or building services engineering are desirable. Professional membership or accreditation in a related field is advantageous but not essential.
