About the Role
As Head of Nature Recovery Scotland, you will lead and deliver Butterfly Conservation’s strategic aims for nature recovery in Scotland, maximising impact for butterflies, moths and people. You will implement BC’s objectives through leadership of the Scotland Nature Recovery team, setting and managing budgets, targets and workplans while inspiring and enabling staff to achieve their best. Your role will involve developing and strengthening collaboration with BC staff, volunteers, stakeholders and partners to drive progress on targeted species recovery programmes, landscape-scale initiatives and wider nature recovery across Scotland.
You will drive delivery of BC’s strategic objectives by designing and managing workplans for the Nature Recovery Scotland team, translating ideas into action and ensuring effective reporting to monitor and share evidence of impact. You will lead species recovery work for priority butterflies and moths, setting objectives and driving targeted action to recover populations of some of Scotland’s most threatened species.
Leading landscape-scale conservation work, you will develop and oversee projects using butterflies and moths as indicators of nature recovery across landscapes. You will also develop and deliver new approaches to contribute to broader nature recovery, including exploring potential nature markets and expanding advice and services to reach more partners.
As line manager, you will lead, manage and be accountable for the Nature Recovery team in Scotland, including budgeting, work planning, resource management, performance management, training, staff development and well-being. You will develop new nature recovery projects, liaise with partners, plan and design projects, manage budgets and report to funders.
Collaboration with Nature Recovery, Fundraising and Finance teams will be key to building a case for support and developing bids for external funding through partnerships, appeals and services. You will oversee management of BC’s Nature Reserves in Scotland through Conservation Managers, working with the Ecology Services team to maximise their contribution to nature recovery.
You will ensure effective budget control and financial reporting, foster close working relationships between BC staff, Branches and volunteers to deliver coordinated nature recovery action, and support the Engagement and Volunteering team to develop and deliver volunteering activity across Scotland.
Working with BC’s policy team and NGO partners, you will support collaborative work on major policy issues and advocate BC priorities in Scotland. You will promote the impact of BC’s work across Scotland through impact reporting and engaging external communications.
In all aspects of your role, you will promote BC’s values of Excellence, Passionate, Inspiring and Collaborative, maintain a strategic overview of the organisation’s UK-wide delivery, contribute to policy and strategic planning, and undertake any other reasonable duties as required. You will work in compliance with equal opportunities policies and BC’s codes of conduct, and actively participate in ongoing professional development.
