About the Role
As Head of Nature Recovery Wales, you will lead and deliver Butterfly Conservation’s strategic aims for nature recovery in Wales, maximising impact for butterflies, moths and people. You will implement BC’s objectives by leading the Wales Nature Recovery team, managing budgets, targets and workplans, and inspiring staff to achieve their best. Your role includes developing and strengthening collaboration with BC staff, volunteers, stakeholders and partners to drive progress on targeted species recovery programmes, landscape-scale initiatives and wider nature recovery across Wales.
You will design and manage workplans for the Nature Recovery Wales team, translate ideas into action, and ensure effective reporting to monitor and share evidence of impact. Leading species recovery work for priority butterflies and moths, you will set objectives and drive targeted action to recover populations of some of the most threatened species. You will also lead landscape-scale conservation projects using butterflies and moths as indicators of nature recovery.
Developing new approaches to contribute to broader nature recovery, including exploring potential nature markets and expanding advice and services to partners, will be key. You will manage and be accountable for the Nature Recovery team in Wales, including line management, budgeting, work planning, performance management, training, staff development and well-being.
You will lead the development of new nature recovery projects, liaise with partners, plan and design projects, manage budgets and report to funders. Collaboration with Nature Recovery, Fundraising and Finance teams to build funding bids and appeals will be essential.
Overseeing BC’s Nature Reserves in Wales through the Conservation Manager and Ecology Services team, you will maximise their contribution to nature recovery. You will ensure effective budget control and financial reporting, foster close working relationships between BC staff, Branches and volunteers, and support volunteering activities across Wales.
Working with BC’s policy team and NGO partners, you will support collaborative work on major policy issues and advocate BC priorities in Wales. You will promote the impact of BC’s work through internal reporting and engaging external communications.
In all aspects of your role, you will promote BC’s values of Excellence, Passionate, Inspiring and Collaborative, maintain a strategic overview of UK-wide delivery, contribute to policy and strategic planning, and undertake any other reasonable duties as required. You will comply with equal opportunities policies, BC’s procedures and codes of conduct, and actively participate in professional development activities.
