About the Role
Syngenta Crop Protection, a global leader in agricultural innovation, is seeking a HSE Adviser and Environmental Specialist to support the delivery of a multi-year HSE Strategy aligned with our Goal Zero ambition. This role promotes and enhances employee health and wellbeing, protects and improves the Jealott's Hill environment, and advances the HSE maturity of the site.
As the site subject matter expert in environment management and sustainability, you will own and develop the site environmental management system and associated processes to ensure compliance with the Syngenta HSE Management System, UK HSE regulations, and best practices. You will lead improvements to protect and enhance the environment.
Key responsibilities include providing professional, science-based HSE advice across health, safety, and environment disciplines; monitoring legislation and standards; liaising with regulatory authorities; leading HSE improvement programmes and projects; maintaining auditable records; delivering HSE training; contributing to inspections and committee meetings; analysing HSE performance data to identify trends and improvements; and collaborating with the Infrastructure team to integrate HSE into all activities.
Jealott's Hill is a major global R&D site located in pleasant semi-rural surroundings between Bracknell and Maidenhead, hosting approximately 800 scientists and support staff. The site focuses on discovery of new active ingredients, formulation technologies, product safety, and technical support.
Experience
- Broad experience in health, safety, and environmental management, ideally within life sciences or similar industries.
- Experience across laboratory, office, and construction environments.
- Working knowledge of UK regulatory bodies such as EA and DEFRA.
- Proven experience conducting risk assessments, audits, emergency response, and incident investigations.
- Experience in sustainability reporting including SBTi, UNSDG, ESOS.
- Experience working in complex global businesses or large campuses with international, multidisciplinary teams.
- Familiarity with HSE systems and platforms such as Enablon.

Qualifications
- Degree in engineering, chemical, biology, or environmental science.
- NEBOSH Certificate or equivalent Health and Safety qualification (essential).
- NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent (preferred) and Environmental management qualification such as IEMA.
- Auditor and Incident Investigator training (essential); lead auditor or investigator training desirable (ISO 14001 or ISO 45001).
- Good understanding of ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 standards.
- Minimum ISEP and/or Grad IOSH membership, working towards chartership.
- Understanding of UK HSE regulatory requirements for labs and biological environments preferred.
- Emergency response management certifications such as Fire Safety and First Aid at Work preferred.
