About the Role
This is an exciting role within the NHS SBS Sustainability and Social Impact team as our Senior Net Zero and Sustainability Manager. You will lead environment-related activity and strategy for NHS Shared Business Services, responsible for setting and driving the carbon reduction strategy and delivering on our Science Based Net-Zero by 2040 targets. Working closely with our group organisation Sopra Steria, you will align and streamline carbon reduction initiatives across the business.

In addition to internal delivery, you will lead customer-focused efforts on scope 3 carbon tracking, managing a data manager to oversee and deliver a pipeline of opportunities for 2027 and beyond. This requires strong customer engagement, team management, and ensuring delivery on time and within budget.

You will support communication and messaging throughout the organisation to promote sustainability awareness across all levels of seniority. Acting as a subject matter expert, you will advise teams, colleagues, and external stakeholders on carbon reduction, highlighting key risks or challenges related to climate change and carbon emissions.

Your responsibilities will also include leading all environmental policy activities, including creation and maintenance of annual submissions such as the Carbon Reduction Plan, strategy documentation, and progress updates.

Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement sustainable practices to reduce NHS SBS’s environmental impact and progress the Net-Zero by 2040 agenda.
- Lead carbon reduction strategies and initiatives aligned with net zero targets.
- Identify and champion innovative technologies and processes to support sustainability and manage a scope 3.1 data mapping system.
- Collaborate with internal teams and external partners to pilot and scale emission reduction solutions.
- Manage and support a data manager to ensure delivery of key projects.
- Engage with internal stakeholders including senior leadership to promote environmental goals.
- Ensure compliance with environmental regulations and standards, flagging any policy risks.
- Analyse complex environmental data to inform decision-making and strategy.
- Lead end-to-end scope 3 carbon emissions product delivery, including internal upskilling, customer engagement, and pipeline management.

Experience
- Environmental management experience, particularly in carbon footprinting and calculation.
- Familiarity with benchmarking tools such as CDP.
- Knowledge of Carbon Emissions Scope 1, 2, and 3.
- Understanding of methodologies to reduce emissions and calculate impact.
- Customer engagement experience, ideally within the NHS.
- Data management experience, preferably with Alteryx and PowerBI.
