About the Role
At WSP, you can shape a career as unique as you. Ireland is playing a critical role in delivering the future energy network with significant investment in transmission infrastructure, including reinforcement programmes, new renewable generation connections and strategic network upgrades supporting Net Zero ambitions. Overhead line infrastructure is central to this transformation, and WSP is supporting many projects shaping the next generation of the UK's electricity network.

As a Senior Overhead Line Engineer, you will join a growing team delivering complex transmission projects across Ireland and beyond. Working from Belfast, Nass or Dublin, you will provide technical leadership on projects ranging from network reinforcement schemes to major new transmission connections supporting offshore wind, renewable energy and grid infrastructure developments.

You will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams across engineering, environmental, planning and project delivery disciplines, helping clients develop and deliver safe, efficient and sustainable overhead line solutions. This role offers the opportunity to lead some of the most significant energy infrastructure projects in Ireland while helping grow WSP's overhead line capability in the region.

Key responsibilities include leading and supporting overhead line engineering and design activities across transmission and distribution projects (11kV to 400kV), providing technical leadership and mentoring, preparing technical reports and design documentation, undertaking overhead line design activities such as route development, PLS-CADD modelling, structure spotting, clearance assessments, conductor and insulator selection, sag-tension calculations, and supporting feasibility studies and stakeholder engagement.

You will also review engineering deliverables to ensure compliance with industry standards and client requirements, support project delivery through design reviews and quality management, contribute to innovative engineering solutions, and actively participate in technical excellence initiatives and industry forums.

Requirements

Experience
- Degree qualified in Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, Power Engineering or related discipline
- Demonstrable experience designing and delivering overhead transmission line projects up to 400kV
- Strong understanding of overhead line design principles including structure spotting, route optimisation, conductor selection, clearance assessments and line performance
- Experience with major transmission infrastructure projects, grid reinforcement, renewable energy connections or energy network developments
- Knowledge of conductor upgrade projects including High Temperature Low Sag (HTLS) conductor technologies
- Familiarity with industry design standards, utility requirements and engineering best practices for overhead transmission systems
- Experience using design tools such as PLS-CADD, PLS-TOWER and PLS-POLE is highly advantageous
- Knowledge of advanced technical studies like conductor galloping, EMF calculations, acoustic assessments, wake effects and AC interference studies is beneficial
- Ability to provide technical leadership and act as a trusted advisor to clients and teams
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
- Experience participating in technical committees or professional organisations such as CIGRE, IEEE or IET is advantageous
- Chartered Engineer status (CEng) or commitment towards achieving professional registration
- Willingness to travel occasionally across Ireland, the UK and internationally
