About the Role

You will produce a comprehensive suite of design drawings for Grid and Primary substations, preparing technical specifications for electrical plant and providing associated electrical designs for substation upgrades and new projects from 11kV up to and including 132kV. Your responsibilities will include producing substation design feasibility reports, cost estimates, layouts, general arrangements, and preparing plant specifications covering transformers, switchgear, and battery systems. You will review designs produced by suppliers and clients to ensure technical compliance with current legislation and policies. Ensuring designs are delivered in accordance with contract requirements and client satisfaction is key. You will also undertake the role of CDM Designer and/or Principal Designer for developed HV and EHV projects, identifying and managing relevant health and safety risks and hazards. Attendance at site meetings to support design or requirement changes during project build is expected. You will ensure project design works align with programme, quality, and margin objectives while actively developing external and internal client relationships.
Experience
- Proven experience in HV and EHV substation design (both AIS & GIS) from 11kV up to and including 132kV
- Experience of small, medium, and technically complex new substation, retrofit, or network reinforcement projects
- Exposure to substation cable design, protection, and control
- Experience of HV and EHV plant specification, design, load calculations, and rating studies
- Preparing specifications for HV and EHV substation equipment including evaluation and identification of plant accessories such as CTs, battery systems, and terminations
- Design cost estimation experience
- Knowledge of engineering standards and technical policies for HV and EHV plant and substations, including earthing and electrical clearances
- Excellent understanding of Health & Safety and CDM requirements with ability to undertake the role of ‘Designer’ and ‘Principal Designer’ under CDM regulations
- Ability to travel as per project needs
