About the Role
Newham is one of the youngest and most diverse boroughs in the UK, with 72% of residents from ethnically diverse communities speaking over 220 languages. Our population of 351,000 is growing rapidly, driven by major regeneration programmes in Stratford, the Royal Docks, Custom House, and Canning Town. The Public Realm team is responsible for increasing recycling, preventing waste, and improving the cleanliness of Newham's streets and parks. This is an exciting opportunity to join our team and contribute to developing services that drive performance and tackle the climate emergency.
We are seeking a Principal Environment Improvement Manager to lead and deliver a range of projects within the Public Realm Service. You will manage projects personally and through team members, applying established project management and programme governance processes. You will support the Public Realm Leadership Team in implementing strategy and policy to achieve ambitious plans, including the rollout of a new borough-wide food waste service. You will lead the Communications workstream for this service and support strategic planning of engagement and communications to reduce waste production, increase reuse and recycling, reduce fly tipping, and improve cleanliness and quality of public spaces.
The role includes budget and staff management responsibilities for a high-functioning and capable team, ensuring effective delivery of services aligned with Newham’s environmental goals.
Experience
Comprehensive knowledge and commitment to sustainable waste management. Experience in collaboratively managing contracts and monitoring data to deliver best value. Proven ability to develop and manage projects aimed at reducing waste, increasing reuse and recycling, and delivering successful outcomes.

Qualifications
Relevant qualifications and experience in environmental management, waste management, or related fields are desirable. Demonstrable experience in project and budget management is essential.
