About the Role

Our Sustainable Water Management business is growing strongly and we are seeking experienced professionals to join our team of 300 water science and engineering experts. You will strengthen our project delivery and technical capability across a wide range of flood risk management projects for Local Authority clients.
Operating as a national team, we ensure fair and transparent project allocation that considers personal interests and development aspirations. This role is suited to passionate professionals with strong experience working with Lead Local Flood Authorities and a solid understanding of key legislation such as the Flood and Water Management Act, the Land Drainage Act, and the National Planning Policy Framework relating to flood risk and drainage.
As a Senior or Principal Consultant/Engineer, you will take technical lead roles on flood risk management projects including flood investigations, flood strategy development, flood alleviation solutions, natural flood management, sustainable drainage master-planning, and supporting the planning process to deliver sustainable water environment solutions. Your responsibilities will be varied, encompassing technical, management, and commercial tasks, alongside mentoring and sharing expertise with junior colleagues.
Key responsibilities include delivering high-quality technical outputs, reviewing technical work, managing small project teams, overseeing workload with minimal supervision, championing health and safety, contributing to project planning, engaging professionally with clients, and supporting business development through securing projects and extensions.
Experience
- Proven experience in flood risk management working with local authorities or a combination of public and private sector flood risk management.
- Demonstrable ability to understand budgets and lead delivery of projects or technical outputs related to flood risk management or sustainable drainage.
- Strong knowledge of the Flood and Water Management Act 2010, the Land Drainage Act, and Planning Practice Guidance: Flood Risk and Coastal Change, with practical application for Local Authorities.
- Desirable knowledge of the UK planning regulatory context.
- Experience in surface water drainage modelling and Sustainable Drainage Systems.
- Experience preparing Local Flood Risk Management Strategies and Strategic Flood Risk Assessments.
- Proven skills in technical report writing and checking.
- Confidence in presenting and leading meetings with clients and team members.
- Experience supporting and mentoring junior colleagues and liaising with senior colleagues.

Qualifications
- Degree in a relevant environmental, geographical, science, or engineering discipline is essential.
- Chartered status with C.WEM, CEnv, CSci, or CEng is desired for Principal level, or evidence of working towards chartership for Senior level.
