WSP is seeking a Principal Engineer with a strong focus on pre-design development and detailed design delivery to join our growing Liveable Places team. Based from WSP's Reading office, this hands-on technical role balances project management, design leadership, assurance and mentoring while working closely with clients and multidisciplinary teams.

You will play a key role in leading the technical design of high quality highways, active travel and public realm schemes—shaping streets and designing places that are safer, greener and more inclusive. Responsibilities include leading pre-design development and detailed design for highways, active travel, road safety and public realm projects; acting as technical lead and checker ensuring compliance with UK standards, CDM compliance and best practice; coordinating highways, drainage, transportation and public realm designs with experience managing multidisciplinary disciplines such as structures, environment and geology; and supporting junior staff through technical leadership and mentoring.

About the Liveable Places Team: WSP's Liveable Places team works with a wide range of UK clients to help achieve their place-making ambitions. The team delivers schemes from concept to delivery including public realm, traffic engineering, transport planning, road safety, traffic signals, pedestrian and traffic modelling, active travel, and parking. Recent key clients include Gloucestershire County Council, West Sussex County Council, East Sussex County Council, West Berkshire Council, Cambridgeshire County Council, West of England Combined Authorities, Devon County Council, National Highways, Westminster City Council and many more. The team comprises over 200 staff across the country and is growing. Experience
Chartered or near Chartered Civil Engineer with strong experience in UK highways, active travel or public realm scheme development and detailed design. Proven experience in highway design and supporting packages. Confident working with standards such as Manual for Streets (MfS), Design Manual for Roads and Bridges (DMRB), Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions (TSRGD), and Local Transport Note (LTN) guidance.

Passionate about design quality and collaborative delivery. Able to lead technically while mentoring junior staff. Comfortable managing multidisciplinary teams and working closely with clients. Enthusiastic about shaping safer, greener and more inclusive streets and places.

Qualifications
Chartered or near Chartered status in Civil Engineering or related discipline.
