About the Role
The Bat Conservation Trust (BCT) is the foremost non-governmental organisation dedicated to bat conservation and habitat protection. Our mission is to work collaboratively with diverse communities to achieve resilient bat populations and improve their habitats in an ever-changing world. We are now seeking a Project Officer to join us on a fixed-term contract until March 2027, supporting the Protecting Scotland’s Island Wonders project, part of the Species on the Edge programme.
This multi-taxa role involves vital bat survey and monitoring work, community engagement, and collaboration with farmers, landowners, and conservation partners across Skye, the Inner Hebrides, and beyond. You will oversee fieldwork, data collection, and reporting to ensure conservation goals are met, organise volunteer training, lead educational activities, and share your knowledge of bat ecology to inspire others.
Additional responsibilities include supporting habitat connectivity, identifying roosting sites, providing specialist bat input for Islay, Mull, Solway, Orkney, and the Outer Hebrides, leading outreach activities, producing progress reports, contributing to budget reviews, and supporting legacy planning.

Experience
- Project management experience
- Experience of bat survey work using bat detectors
- Data management experience
- Experience reporting to funders
- Understanding of species and habitat conservation including practical habitat management
- Good knowledge of bat, bird, plant, and invertebrate ecology and habitat management
- Understanding of agriculture and agri-environment schemes

Qualifications
- Minimum of five National 5s or equivalent
- Full, valid driving licence or other suitable means of transport for travel to areas not served by public transport
- Willingness to undergo a Protecting Vulnerable Groups Scheme (PVG) check as the role may involve working with children and vulnerable adults
