
Location
South East England, with hybrid working involving majority time at weather station network and some time working from home. Due to operational requirements, applicants must reside within the South East England region.
Hours
Full Time - 37 hours per week. Part-time applications from a minimum of 30 hours per week will be considered, as well as job share arrangements. Flexible working patterns will be discussed to suit individual needs.
Salary
£37,701 per annum, with a total reward package up to £49,448 including employer pension contributions.
About the Role
As a Regional Network Officer (RNO) for South East England, you will be the key contact ensuring the quality, timeliness, and availability of surface-based meteorological observations within your region. Your responsibilities include overseeing land observation site performance, installing and maintaining meteorological instruments, responding to incidents, and supporting voluntary observers and site authorities.
This role requires extensive travel, including overnight stays up to 4 nights per week, and occasional travel by air and sea to remote locations. You will become an expert in land surface meteorological instruments and observation methods.
Key duties include:
- Inspecting and assessing observing sites against standards, installing or repairing equipment, and advising on instrument deployment.
- Instructing and supporting voluntary observers to improve observation quality and quantity.
- Monitoring observation quality, timeliness, and availability, ensuring instrument calibration and accuracy.
- Managing and archiving site metadata in line with international requirements.
- Planning site visits efficiently and maintaining local stocks of calibrated instruments and literature.
- Collaborating with colleagues and neighbouring RNOs to ensure network-wide quality management.
- Occasionally visiting sites at short notice to support verification of national weather and climate records.
This is a temporary 2-year position with potential to become permanent.
Experience
- Broad knowledge of land observing systems and understanding of manual and automatic meteorological instrumentation.
- Proven ability to work unsupervised, manage multiple tasks, and prioritise effectively.
- Flexibility to work outside normal office hours and undertake overnight visits.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with ability to influence, negotiate, and build strong working relationships.
- Ability to communicate technical information clearly to diverse audiences.
- Physical capability to transport and install equipment, including trekking over rough terrain in challenging weather.

Qualifications
There are no specific formal qualifications required; however, relevant experience and technical knowledge in meteorological instrumentation and observation are essential. A full UK driving licence is desirable due to travel requirements.
