You’ll be part of our 300-strong technically diverse Intelligent Infrastructure business, delivering for a range of transportation and infrastructure clients. Our operational safety work focuses on understanding the safety impact of design, operation and technology in infrastructure to reduce harm to transport users, workers and other impacted parties. Through hazard identification, risk assessment and safety evaluation, we apply a safe systems approach to support client decision making and safety governance.
In this role, you will take a systems view and understand the wider context of policy, process, technology or governance changes. You will put people at the heart of designs and decisions, ensuring inclusivity so all users, including those with protected characteristics and neurodivergent needs, feel safe and comfortable.
You will work collaboratively with specialists across WSP on projects ranging from short-term advisory to long-term multi-disciplinary engineering design schemes. Your expertise in operational safety within roads, rail, energy or active travel will help deliver a strong, tailored offering for our clients. Your portfolio will include projects at central and local government levels, providing a varied and diverse workload.
A typical week includes:
- Providing expert advice to clients to support their objectives
- Collaborating with WSP specialists on safety risk assessments, operating procedures, policy and major projects
- Conducting research and data analysis
- Engaging with stakeholders such as emergency services, operational staff, highway authorities and transport operators
- Leading technical work packages ensuring time, cost and quality targets are met
- Presenting findings and recommendations to client forums and industry stakeholders
- Supporting the growth of the Operational Safety expertise area and mentoring early career professionals
Experience
- Preparing and/or reviewing safety risk assessments, hazard logs and risk registers, particularly within the transport domain
- Understanding and appreciation of safety by design concepts, prevention principles and the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 (CDM 2015)
About you
- Motivated and resourceful with a passion for systematic safety integration such as the safe system approach and Vision Zero
- Proven track record in a consultancy role or demonstrated aptitude and skills to provide excellent consultancy support
- Ability to undertake qualitative and quantitative data analysis, including use of artificial intelligence tools for research, analysis and reporting
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to construct compelling narratives
- Conscientious with attention to detail and able to work independently
- Enthusiastic about sharing knowledge and supporting the development of junior colleagues
- Strong stakeholder relationship and collaboration skills
- Experience contributing to or developing client proposals and business development
Qualifications
- Degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline such as civil engineering, transport studies, geography, psychology or arts, or technician level qualifications (BTEC, HNC/HND) with appropriate experience
