About the Role
Join UK Atomic Energy Authority and contribute to the future of fusion energy as a Senior Cryogenics Engineer. You will provide expert knowledge to a small team working on major projects such as the STEP cryoplant and cryodistribution system. This system will be among the largest cryogenic installations globally, comparable to those at ITER and CERN. Your role involves engaging with commercial suppliers and cryogenics users across STEP to define system requirements and ensure successful delivery.
Key responsibilities include process and equipment design and selection, creation of P&IDs, heat and mass balances, planning and performing simulation analyses, validating others' analyses, and presenting strategic reports to senior management. You will contribute to resource and budget negotiations, select and validate design standards, manage vendors and significant contracts, and engage with the wider cryogenics sector to drive innovation. Supervising junior engineers or students, preparing papers for journals and conferences, and ensuring safety requirements are met are also essential parts of this role. Additional reasonable duties commensurate with the role may be assigned.
Experience
- Extensive experience in cryogenics from laboratory or industrial settings
- Modelling and simulation using CFD and thermal analysis software such as MATLAB Simulink, MATLAB coding, ANSYS, and/or COMSOL
- Process engineering design of cryogenic systems using simulation tools like ASPEN HYSYS/PLUS, MATLAB, MATLAB Simulink
- Good working knowledge of engineering materials and their properties
- Demonstrable ability to work and communicate effectively within a multi-disciplinary team
- Understanding of modern project management tools and methodologies
About you
Excellent collaboration skills including written, verbal, and interpersonal communication. You are motivated to engage with industry and the wider cryogenics sector to drive innovative developments. You are capable of supervising and directing junior engineers or students and presenting technical information clearly to senior management and at conferences.
Qualifications
- Degree or equivalent in Cryogenic, Mechanical or Process Engineering, or equivalent STEM subject
Desirable
- Experience in design, development, and construction of cryogenic distribution systems (cold boxes, valve boxes, transfer lines, heat exchangers) or equivalent
- Experience in design, specification, and selection of cryogenic/pneumatic/hydraulic system components (valves, compressors, pipes, instrumentation, pumps, turbines) or equivalent
- Comprehensive understanding of process automation, instrumentation, and control
- Experience with environmental factors such as plasmas, vacuum, and transient magnetic fields
- Solid understanding of modern standards in Quality Assurance, Safety, Health, and the Environment
