About the Role
National Highways is seeking a Senior Water Advisor to join the Environmental Sustainability Division within Safety, Engineering and Standards (SES). This division provides environmental sustainability advice and assurance across the business and leads the development and implementation of National Highways’ Environmental Sustainability Strategy. The role is based within the Water Environment Team, responsible for delivering water quality and flooding operational advice and technical leadership, as well as leading the cross-company programme to renew and retrofit water quality treatment facilities at pollution risk locations.
As a Senior Advisor, you will provide specialist technical advice on Water Quality Environmental Impact Assessments, Flood Risk Assessments, and the design and management of drainage treatment and attenuation facilities, including nature-based solutions. You will manage the company’s Performance Indicator for Water Quality and ensure metric governance processes are followed. Building effective relationships with key organisations such as the Environment Agency, CIWEM, and relevant NGOs will be essential.
You will support programme managers in delivering investment programmes for drainage treatment facilities and lead or contribute to research and development projects addressing future water environment challenges, including microplastics in highway runoff and flood risk under climate change.
This is a hybrid role with flexibility to work remotely up to 60% of the time, balanced with attendance at team meetings and site visits.
