Sustainability Manager (Social & Economic)

Salary
£50,100 - £75,100 (dependent on experience) + performance-related bonus + a range of benefits to support your finances, wellbeing and family.
About the Role
This role plays a key part in shaping and delivering SSE's short- and long-term social and economic sustainability priorities, as outlined in our Group strategies, plans, and policies. You will help bring these ambitions to life by working across teams and projects to embed meaningful social and economic impact. Acting as a trusted advisor on human rights and other aspects of social sustainability, including economic impact and large capital projects, you will guide and influence how SSE manages, reports, and improves its approach to social sustainability—setting thoughtful standards and practices aligned with wider goals.
Reporting directly to the Head of Social and Economic Sustainability, you will collaborate closely with colleagues across SSE including Health & Safety, HR, and Procurement teams. Your work will help build value through enhanced sustainability credentials and create opportunities for leadership and innovation in this space.
Key responsibilities include:
- Leading day-to-day human rights and modern slavery activities for SSE Group, providing advice on risk, due diligence, and reporting.
- Shaping and nurturing SSE's social and economic sustainability activities by aligning them with business goals and stakeholder expectations, championing just transition principles.
- Collaborating across teams to embed social sustainability into projects and procurement, ensuring inclusive, responsible practices aligned with regulatory and investor needs.
- Working with internal stakeholders to strengthen the quality of social data and reporting.
- Supporting continuous learning and improvement by identifying opportunities to enhance social and economic value while managing risks through sustainable approaches.
- Building meaningful relationships with internal and external stakeholders, representing SSE in industry forums and supporting human rights due diligence in line with global standards.
Experience
- Relevant industry experience with a thoughtful and informed approach to sustainability and the challenges facing the energy sector.
- Experience managing cross-functional project teams with a collaborative mindset and ability to balance multiple priorities.
- Confidence working with data, attention to detail, and ability to interpret and communicate insights to support informed decision-making.
- Understanding of SSE's business and sectors including renewables and networks.
