About the Role
This role sits within the Climate, Environment and Sustainability Programme at techUK, a leading trade association representing over 1100 UK tech companies. The Sustainability - Policy Manager will shape how the tech industry responds to evolving policy and regulatory challenges while positioning digital solutions as key enablers of sustainability across sectors. The role covers critical issues including climate change policy, circular economy regulation (e-waste, eco-design), business and human rights (supply chain transparency, modern slavery), ESG disclosures, and nature and biodiversity. You will lead policy areas, manage working groups, develop policy positions, coordinate impactful interventions, and have the autonomy to initiate and run your own projects. Beyond policy development, you will support members by sharing insights on sustainability trends, standards, best practices, and voluntary initiatives to help firms strategically approach sustainability.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead on key sustainability topics and working groups, especially nature and biodiversity
- Develop political engagement strategies to position tech as a sustainability solution and represent the industry in Westminster debates
- Manage webinars and in-person events on sustainability topics
- Coordinate techUK and member responses to government consultations and parliamentary inquiries
- Write papers, briefings, and responses to inquiries and consultations
- Prepare summaries and analysis of new government policies, standards, and regulations
- Engage regularly with officials from DESNZ, DBT, Defra, regulators, and other external bodies
- Represent techUK and the tech industry at UK and international events and meetings
- Support members and colleagues in developing policy positions across sustainability topics including human rights, supply chain due diligence, e-waste, climate change, and circular economy
- Deputise for the Associate Director at events, government meetings, and member workshops
- Draft briefings for MPs, officials, and Ministers on key sustainability issues
- Write content for the techUK website and external publications to promote digital tech as a solution to sustainability challenges
- Aim to become a subject matter expert on digital sustainability over time
Experience
- Understanding of the UK tech sector
- Experience lobbying policy positions to government officials and MPs
- Experience dealing with sustainability policy in businesses (desired)
- Experience working in a membership organisation (desired)
- Experience organising events and webinars for business audiences (desired)
About you
- Passionate and interested in sustainability, net zero transition, and the role of business
- Ability to work with diverse stakeholders and balance competing views
- Adaptable and flexible, able to work across multiple policy areas and manage concurrent priorities
- Strong writing skills for briefing papers, media articles, and complex policy summaries
- Excellent organisational skills to run effective and engaging working groups
- Proactive and self-motivated with the confidence to speak up and present to external audiences
- Comfortable working independently with autonomy while supported by a team of six
