About the Role
Join the London Borough of Hackney’s Public Realm Division, where we ensure our borough is clean, safe and accessible for all residents, businesses and visitors. Within the Streetscene team, you will work in the Sustainable Transport and Engagement team delivering smarter travel and road safety programmes aimed at encouraging safer and more sustainable travel behaviours.
This is a 2-year fixed term contract/secondment opportunity to support and progress an ambitious transport planning project focused on sustainable and active travel, with particular emphasis on shared mobility and transport decarbonisation.
Working alongside an appointed service delivery partner, you will help plan and deliver forward-looking sustainable and shared mobility networks that accelerate the uptake of cleaner travel options, improving air quality for all residents. You will work under the supervision of a senior transport planner, with opportunities to lead on specific projects.
Your role will involve collecting, assembling and analysing data to provide essential background for decision-making. You will also support statutory and legal transport obligations, including traffic management orders and Council decision-making processes, in a politically sensitive and customer-focused environment.
You will have the opportunity to design and implement public consultation and engagement plans in coordination with the Council’s communications team, using your initiative and creativity.
We value staff dedication and commitment to our organisational goals and offer a supportive environment where you can contribute to making Hackney a better place for everyone.
Experience
A relevant degree or equivalent is required. Experience or further qualifications in Transport Planning, project management, or a related field would be advantageous. Familiarity with data analysis tools such as Excel (including PIVOT and LOOKUP functions) is essential. Knowledge of GIS is a considerable benefit. Experience engaging with and managing stakeholders, including politicians, is desirable.
About you
You will demonstrate strong report writing skills, knowledge of transport policy, and the ability to interpret transport strategies. Excellent verbal communication skills and the capacity to work in a politically sensitive environment are important. You should be proactive, creative, and able to work both independently and as part of a team.
We seek individuals who are proud, ambitious, pioneering, open, proactive and inclusive, committed to representing the Council’s values and serving our diverse community.
Qualifications
A relevant degree or equivalent qualification is the minimum requirement. Additional qualifications or training in transport planning or project management are advantageous. Training relevant to the role and project work will be provided.
