About the Role
Reporting to the Head of Test, the Test Environment Manager will coordinate and manage test environments supporting multiple application development groups. These environments include isolated subsystems and end-to-end setups, configured using a combination of cloud-based infrastructure and bare metal systems. The role involves overseeing a team responsible for release automation and configuration management, supporting a continuous release schedule across diverse platforms including Java, .NET, and dynamic languages integrated with Oracle and SQL Server databases.
The Test Environment Manager will collaborate closely with project managers, operations professionals, test managers, and senior technical engineering managers to sequence projects efficiently across limited testing environments. This role includes line management of 2-3 Logistics and Commissioning Engineers and covers all aspects of the product lifecycle from concept through development, testing, implementation, and operational support.
Key responsibilities include defining and owning the end-to-end Test Environment Management strategy, integrating with DevOps pipelines, CI/CD, and automated deployments. The role requires proactive environment optimisation, future-proofing through cloud adoption, virtualisation, and containerisation strategies such as Kubernetes and Docker. The manager will also work closely with DevOps and Infrastructure teams to automate environment provisioning and implement monitoring tools like AppDynamics, Splunk, or Grafana.
Additional duties include capacity and demand management to avoid conflicts and delays, stakeholder leadership and reporting to senior leadership, driving continuous improvement initiatives, and introducing best practices aligned with ITIL and DevOps principles. The role demands conducting regular environment health, audit, and risk assessments with clear remediation plans.
Strategic people leadership is a vital component, including mentoring and developing the Logistics and Commissioning team to transition from reactive support to proactive environment engineering, focusing on upskilling in cloud and DevOps technologies.
