About the Role
Reporting to the Head of Test, the Test Environment Manager will coordinate and manage test environments supporting multiple application development groups. These environments include isolated subsystems and end-to-end configurations, leveraging a combination of cloud-based infrastructure and bare metal systems. The role involves working closely with release automation and configuration management teams to support a continuous release schedule across diverse platforms including Java, .NET, and dynamic languages integrated with Oracle and SQL Server databases.
The Test Environment Manager will collaborate with project managers, operations, test managers, and senior technical engineering managers to prioritize and sequence testing projects across limited environment resources. This role also includes line management responsibility for 2-3 Logistics and Commissioning Engineers.
Key responsibilities include defining and owning the end-to-end test environment strategy, integrating with DevOps pipelines, CI/CD, and automated deployments. The role requires proactive environment optimization, capacity and demand management, and the introduction of best practices aligned with ITIL and DevOps principles. The manager will also lead continuous improvement initiatives to reduce downtime, lower operational costs, and increase test efficiency.
Additional duties include working with IT and Infrastructure teams to future-proof test environments through cloud adoption, virtualization, and containerization strategies such as Kubernetes and Docker. The role demands regular environment health audits, risk assessments, and clear remediation plans.
As a strategic leader, the Test Environment Manager will mentor and develop their team, fostering a shift from reactive support to proactive environment engineering, while managing performance, career development, and succession planning.
