About the Role
Reporting to the Head of Test, the Test Environment Manager will coordinate test environments for multiple application development groups. These environments include isolated subsystems and end-to-end systems configured using a combination of cloud-based infrastructure and bare metal systems. The role supports a continuous release schedule across multiple groups and platforms including Java, .NET, and various dynamic languages running on application servers integrated with Oracle and SQL Server databases.
The Test Environment Manager will collaborate with project managers, operations professionals, test managers, and senior technical engineering managers to sequence projects for testing on a limited number of environments. This role also includes line management responsibility for 2-3 Logistics and Commissioning Engineers.
Key responsibilities include defining and owning the end-to-end Test Environment Management strategy, integrating with DevOps pipelines, CI/CD, and automated deployments. The role involves environment optimisation initiatives, future-proofing roadmaps including cloud adoption, virtualisation, and containerisation strategies such as Kubernetes and Docker.
The manager will work closely with DevOps and Infrastructure teams to automate environment spin-up/down, evaluate and implement monitoring tools like AppDynamics, Splunk, and Grafana, and manage capacity and demand to avoid project delays. Acting as the primary interface between multiple teams, the role requires regular reporting on environment performance, availability, and risks to senior leadership.
Driving continuous improvement initiatives, introducing best practices aligned with ITIL and DevOps principles, and conducting regular environment health and risk assessments are essential. The role also includes strategic people leadership, mentoring the team to transition from reactive support to proactive environment engineering, and managing performance, career development, and succession planning.
Experience
Proven experience managing complex, multi-application test environments in mid-to-large organisations. Strong knowledge of CI/CD, DevOps principles, and automated environment provisioning. Familiarity with monitoring tools such as AppDynamics, Splunk, Grafana, or similar. Hands-on experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP), containerisation, or virtualised infrastructure is highly desirable.
Ability to lead cross-functional teams, manage competing priorities, and influence stakeholders at all levels. Experience in environment governance, data compliance, and security requirements is essential.
About you
Strong communication skills with the ability to network across specialist areas. Proactive and innovative mindset with a capacity to propose and implement solutions aligned with organisational objectives. Leadership skills to mentor and develop team members, driving continuous improvement and operational excellence.
Qualifications
Typically a Bachelor's degree, Master's degree, PhD, or equivalent experience. In-depth expertise in key engineering principles with the ability to adapt those principles across multiple projects. Proven track record of evaluating complex data and selecting effective methods to achieve results.
