About the Role
Reporting to the Head of Test, the Test Environment Manager will coordinate and manage test environments across multiple application development groups within Cubic Transportation Systems. These environments include isolated subsystems and end-to-end configurations, leveraging a combination of cloud-based infrastructure and bare metal systems. The role supports a continuous release schedule and involves platforms such as Java, .NET, and various dynamic languages integrated with Oracle and SQL Server databases.
The Test Environment Manager will collaborate closely with project managers, operations teams, test managers, and senior technical engineering managers to prioritize and sequence testing projects on limited environment resources. This role also includes line management responsibility for 2-3 Logistics and Commissioning Engineers.
Key responsibilities include defining and owning the end-to-end Test Environment Management strategy, integrating with DevOps pipelines, CI/CD, and automated deployments. The role drives environment optimisation initiatives, works with IT and Infrastructure teams on future-proofing strategies including cloud adoption, virtualisation, and containerisation (e.g., Kubernetes, Docker).
The manager will implement capacity and demand management processes, maintain environment utilisation dashboards for senior stakeholders, and act as the primary interface for environment-related needs across multiple teams. They will present regular performance, availability, and risk reports to senior leadership and resolve conflicts over environment resources with clear prioritisation and governance.
Continuous improvement is a core focus, including reducing downtime, lowering operational costs, increasing test efficiency, and introducing best practices aligned with ITIL and DevOps principles. Regular environment health, audit, and risk assessments with remediation plans are also part of the role.
As a strategic people leader, the Test Environment Manager will lead and develop the Logistics and Commissioning team, focusing on performance, career development, cloud/DevOps upskilling, and succession planning, mentoring the team to transition from reactive support to proactive environment engineering.
The role encompasses all aspects of the product lifecycle from concept through development, testing, implementation, and operational support, ensuring high-quality environment management that supports Cubic's business objectives.
