About the Role
We have an exciting opportunity for a one-year secondment or fixed term contract as a Waste Prevention and Recycling Team Leader. You will build upon the good work of the existing team by continuing to improve recycling rates and prevent waste at every opportunity. This includes the development, implementation, and delivery of the Council’s waste education, communications, and outreach programmes.
Your positive ‘can do’ attitude will be essential in driving forward engagement and waste prevention projects, as well as promoting other key environmental messages. The role involves collaborating with various stakeholders to improve service outcomes and working closely with the community and external partnerships including the East London Waste Authority, neighbouring boroughs, and internal Neighbourhood and Housing teams.
You will be responsible for identifying, developing, and managing targeted campaigns and projects to educate and influence residents about refuse and recycling. Key initiatives include introducing a tool library with community partners, enhancing clothes swaps and repair cafes for residents, and engaging residents in the upcoming food waste service roll out. This will also involve recruiting and managing a team of door-knocking staff to engage residents directly at their doorsteps.
If you are a strong team player with a 'can do' attitude and want to gain further skills in engagement and waste prevention, we look forward to receiving your application.
IMPORTANT: If you are a London Borough of Newham member of staff applying for this role as a secondment, please ensure you have the agreement of your current employing service and inform your line manager of your intention to apply.
Experience
Proven experience in managing community engagement projects or campaigns, preferably within waste prevention, recycling, or environmental services. Experience working with diverse stakeholders and partnerships is highly desirable.
About you
You are a motivated and enthusiastic individual with a positive ‘can do’ attitude. You enjoy working collaboratively as part of a team and have strong communication and organisational skills. You are confident in engaging with residents and managing outreach activities. Flexibility to work some weekends and occasional evenings is essential.
Qualifications
There are no specific qualification requirements for this role, but relevant experience in waste management, community engagement, or environmental education will be advantageous.
