About the Role
As part of the Waste Management Unit fulfilling the statutory duties of a waste disposal authority, the Recycling Centre service in Hertfordshire receives approximately 1.5 million visitors each year and handles around 80,000 tonnes of household waste across a network of 16 Recycling Centres. In this role, you will embody our commitment to public service, sustainability, and operational excellence by leading and inspiring remote teams across multiple sites. You will drive high standards in health & safety, environmental compliance, and customer service while conducting regular site visits, inspections, and providing hands-on support. Your responsibilities will include managing complex public inquiries, complaints, and incident investigations, championing recycling, waste reduction, and reuse initiatives, and making informed decisions on behalf of senior management, especially during weekends. You will also tackle misuse of public services to protect taxpayer value, solve operational challenges with creativity and initiative, and manage infrastructure, equipment, and contractor relationships to ensure seamless service delivery.

Experience
- Proven experience in leading and motivating remote teams, ideally across multiple operational sites.
- Experience managing site infrastructure, equipment, and contractor relationships.
- Confidence in handling public complaints, enquiries, and incident investigations with professionalism and empathy.

Qualifications
- Desirable: Certificate of Technical Competence.
- Desirable: Health and safety management qualification.
- Waste management experience is advantageous.
- Ability to drive and/or travel around Hertfordshire using own transport or company vehicle.
- Fluency in spoken English to converse with the public and provide accurate advice is essential.
