About the Role
Employed by East Devon District Council, you will be part of the South East Devon Habitat Regulations Partnership, a collaborative effort between East Devon District Council, Exeter City Council, Teignbridge District Council and Natural England. This partnership aims to protect internationally important wildlife sites such as the Exe Estuary, Dawlish Warren and the East Devon Pebblebed Heaths from recreational disturbance.

In this role, you will help prevent recreational pressure from harming these protected wildlife sites through engaging and educating visitors, monitoring and enforcement via your on-site presence, raising awareness of the sites’ conservation importance, and encouraging responsible behaviour. Your duties will include walking and boat patrols, hosting visitor events, working with local school groups and retailers, and initiating polite but assertive conversations with visitors to prevent damaging activities. You will also take follow-up action as required.

You will work collaboratively with a small team of Wildlife Wardens across the region, assisting in gathering evidence on user activities, their effects on wildlife, and the effectiveness of mitigation measures. Outreach work alongside organisations such as the Pebblebed Heaths Conservation Trust, Devon Wildlife Trust, RSPB and Exe Estuary Management Partnership will also be part of your remit.

Requirements

Experience
Previous experience engaging with the public and a range of stakeholders is highly beneficial. Experience in enforcement and dealing with difficult situations tactfully and assertively is important. Some experience with business social media posting, writing articles for newsletters, and preparing update reports is advantageous.

About you
You will have a good standard of education and a keen interest in wildlife and conservation, with a solid understanding of nature conservation and countryside issues. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential. You must be confident around dogs and water, as operating the Patrol Boat on the Exe Estuary is required. A driving licence and ability to travel as needed are necessary, with reasonable adjustments possible under the Equality Act.

Qualifications
No specific qualifications are stated as mandatory, but a good educational background and relevant experience in conservation or related fields will support your application.
