About the Role
The Ecology Team and Hampshire Biodiversity Information Centre (HBIC) form part of a large, integrated, multi-disciplinary team providing specialist environmental services to Hampshire County Council and other public authorities. The Ecology Team supports the delivery of a variety of property and infrastructure projects across Hampshire and beyond, combining a commercial sector approach with public sector objectives. HBIC, as an accredited local environment records centre, collates information on Hampshire’s natural environment and collaborates with numerous partner organisations involved in biodiversity data supply and use.
Working closely with the Manager of HBIC and the Ecology Team Leads, the Assistant Ecologist will support both teams in extracting, assembling, managing, interpreting, and disseminating relevant and up-to-date biodiversity information. This enables the County Council and its partners to meet statutory obligations and environmental policies related to sustainable development and environmental stewardship.
The role requires a collaborative and reliable team member who can also work independently and proactively. The successful candidate will have a strong work ethic, good organisational and communication skills, and experience in biodiversity data handling, GIS, and Access databases. Confidence in using typical IT applications such as MS Word, Excel, and Outlook is essential. Knowledge and experience of habitat survey and habitat classification is desirable.
This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to protecting and enhancing Hampshire's unique natural environment, working within a supportive local authority environment that values wellbeing, personal development, and flexible working patterns. Hampshire County Council offers training to develop your skills in ecology and data handling, alongside the benefits of working on a varied programme with an experienced team of ecologists.
