About the Role
Field is an international developer, owner, and operator of renewable infrastructure with robust pipelines of Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects across the UK, Italy, Spain, and Germany. Backed by a £200 million investment from DIF Capital Partners (now CVC DIF), we are on a mission to grow internationally and build a leading global BESS portfolio. Our eclectic team combines experience from scaling billion-dollar tech start-ups and energy companies with deep expertise in energy markets.
As Lead BESS Engineer, you will lead the design and selection of battery systems across Field’s multi-GWh energy storage projects. Your role covers the full battery lifecycle, working closely with development, construction, and operations teams to support site design, noise assessments, interface management with BOP contractors, and ongoing asset management to optimize battery performance.
You will stay up to date with technological advances in battery cell design, container design, and power conversion equipment. The role involves travel to manufacturing sites and industry conferences to witness tests, engage on project issues, and maintain relationships with technical and commercial partners.
This is a broad and varied role suited to someone with an engineering or physical science background, an entrepreneurial mindset, and a passion for rapidly evolving technology. You will contribute to developing conceptual designs for battery storage systems, support tender evaluations, assist construction teams with commissioning quality, lead supplier engagement, support legal and contractual teams with technical expertise, and develop in-house approaches to long-term battery management.
Experience
At least 6 years’ experience in the energy industry, preferably with an energy equipment manufacturer, energy asset owner, or energy design consultancy. Experience with power system design or modelling is highly desirable.
About you
You enjoy technical detail and solving new problems with new technology. You are an open, clear communicator who works collaboratively and values teamwork. You are highly organised, able to manage a varied workload efficiently. You are enthusiastic, curious, and knowledgeable about the energy storage industry.
Qualifications
An engineering or physical science degree. Deep understanding of at least one of the following technologies: inverters, battery cells and Battery Management Systems, HV and MV electrical power systems. Able to communicate complex concepts to non-technical colleagues and effectively engage with contractors and suppliers worldwide. Willingness to travel occasionally to sites and suppliers across Europe and China.
