About the Role
You’ll be joining the Atmosphere, Ice, & Climate (AIC) team to work on the Rain on Antarctic Sea Ice and Its Impacts (ROASII) project. This project aims to provide new understanding and quantification of anticipated increases in rainfall and its effects on Antarctic sea ice. Climate warming is expected to cause more frequent rainfall and air temperatures above freezing in the Southern Ocean, increasing the likelihood of melt ponds forming on Antarctic sea ice. Melt ponds accelerate summer sea ice decay, impacting oceanic, glaciological, and ecological systems in the Southern Hemisphere, enhancing polar amplification, and influencing global climate. However, there is limited understanding of how rainfall will change and its impact on sea ice.

You will contribute to BAS’s efforts by using models and observations to quantify present-day rainfall occurrences over Antarctic sea ice and improve understanding of the processes involved. You will also develop realistic projections of future rainfall over Antarctic sea ice. The role offers opportunities to collaborate with scientists from BAS, the Universities of Leeds and Reading, and international peers. Other project scientists focus on improving sea ice model representations of rain effects and evaluating rainfall impacts on melt pond formation and sea ice changes.

You will benefit from extensive training and development opportunities provided by UKRI and BAS. The team is involved in several related projects investigating Antarctic extreme weather and regional climate modeling, which have synergies with ROASII.
