About the Role
This post is a member of the Conservation Programme Team within the wider Conservation Team at the People's Trust for Endangered Species (PTES). The Dormouse Officer is responsible for delivering the activities and objectives of the Hazel Dormouse Recovery Programme. This role involves organising and delivering PTES’s hazel dormouse recovery programme objectives in partnership with internal colleagues and external partners, playing a central role in English and Welsh dormouse conservation efforts through three key projects that form the statutory defined recovery programme.

Key Responsibilities
National Dormouse Monitoring Programme (NDMP): Engage with volunteers at NDMP sites to maintain and enhance programme quality, provide support, manage online site registration and data entry systems, refresh and share field monitoring guidance annually including health and safety risk assessments, manage a Google forum and produce quarterly e-newsletters, lead field monitoring sessions, produce public-facing summaries using annual trend data, contribute to media content, and manage the dormouse nest box programme.
Hazel Dormouse Reintroduction Programme: Source suitable woodland sites in strategic locations, liaise with captive breeders and vets to ensure healthy animal supply, support landowners and managers with habitat management, maintain a pipeline of skilled local volunteers, produce regular reports on programme outcomes, and act as media spokesperson when required.
Knowledge Sharing, Guidance and Support: Identify and update evidence for land management and ecology training, critique guidance from other stakeholders, and plan and deliver the national dormouse conference.
Finance, Funding and Reporting: Manage and track budgets, contribute to funding bids, support income generation, monitor expenditure, produce reports for funders and the board, and maintain oversight of the Hazel Dormouse Strategic Plan.
National Species Conservation Strategy: Contribute to the development and delivery of goals and objectives with stakeholders and deliver assigned objectives.
Other Work: Contribute to organisational projects as required.
Working Principles: Commit to a respectful, positive working culture, collaborate effectively, comply with PTES policies and code of conduct, be cost conscious, commit to personal and professional development, demonstrate enthusiasm for nature and conservation, and act as a good ambassador for PTES.
