Home-based with a nearby Hub in the West Midlands for collaborative working. Site visits across the West Midlands region.

Hours
Full Time - 37 hours per week, Monday to Friday

Salary
£33,677 per annum plus £390 per month Car Cash Allowance

About the Role
As an Ecologist at Canal & River Trust, you will provide expert technical ecology advice and support the protection, improvement, and promotion of the natural environment of the waterways. You will have responsibility for a defined geographical area and/or specific topics at regional or national level. Your role includes leading the development and implementation of Asset Management Strategies for environmental assets, managing survey and monitoring programmes, and contributing to the environmental management system. You will coordinate volunteer ecological activities, support public awareness initiatives, and engage with stakeholders to enhance the Trust’s reputation and secure additional resources. Deputising for the Environment Manager in their absence, you will also lead on induction and mentoring of new team members and manage placement volunteers. This fixed-term 2-year role offers the opportunity to work within a passionate team dedicated to maintaining and enhancing the UK’s waterways and natural heritage.

Requirements

Experience
Proven post-qualification experience applying specialist ecological knowledge within a business environment. High-level knowledge and practical experience of UK and European environmental policy and regulatory frameworks. Experience operating within a customer service environment. Ability to review conflicting risks and make sound judgements within delegated responsibility. Skilled negotiator with internal and external contacts to achieve desired outcomes.

Confident in leading volunteer coordination and public engagement activities. Holds a full valid UK driving licence.

Qualifications
Degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline. Chartered professional status (e.g. C.Env) and full membership of a relevant professional institution such as CIEEM, CIWEM, CIWM, or IEMA. Commitment to maintaining Continuous Professional Development (CPD). Understanding of Trust governance, financial controls, and compliance systems.
