About the Role
Join the Environment Agency’s water industry regulation teams and play a key role in combating environmental crime related to water. You will regulate one of the nine water companies operating nationally, ensuring compliance with environmental permits and legislation. Your work will focus on preventing pollution, regulating sewage treatment works, storm overflows, and maintaining compliance across the sewerage network. This is a pivotal role at a time of growing environmental challenges and increased scrutiny of water pollution.
As an Environment Officer, you will be part of a frontline team dedicated to building a cleaner, safer, and healthier environment. Your responsibilities will include planning and conducting compliance activities, enforcing regulations, engaging with local businesses and communities, and taking enforcement action when necessary, including preparing evidence for legal proceedings in serious cases.
The role involves frequent travel, sometimes at short notice, and may require overnight stays. You will follow a structured development programme with initial residential training sessions and field visits to gain practical experience. All necessary training, equipment, and clothing will be provided to ensure your safety and success.
We offer a supportive and inclusive working environment with flexible working options, extensive training and career development, a generous pension scheme, 25 days annual leave plus 8 bank holidays, standby and incident response payments, and two paid environmental outcome days each year to volunteer in your community. Part-time working will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Experience
Relevant professional experience in science, environmental work, or regulation is required. Experience working with customers and the ability to communicate effectively with different audiences is essential.

You should have a passion for environmental improvement, resilience, commitment to learn, and the ability to adapt your communication style. We welcome candidates from diverse backgrounds and encourage applications from those with scientific understanding and a strong motivation to make a difference.
