About the Role
As an Environment Officer - Waste Regulation, you will be based in one of our area offices and responsible for regulating a diverse range of waste management companies and their permitted activities. You will oversee various waste industry sectors, from small operators to large corporate bodies, ensuring their chemical, biological, and physical waste treatment processes are conducted without polluting the environment or causing harm to people. Your role includes gathering evidence, enforcing regulations, issuing enforcement notices, and potentially providing evidence in court for serious offences. You will tackle illegal waste activities to protect legitimate businesses and prevent environmental harm, working closely with external partners such as local authorities, police, fire and rescue services, and the public. You will engage with local businesses and communities using strong customer service skills and respond to environmental incidents, sometimes outside normal hours, with additional payment opportunities.
The waste industry is a dynamic and innovative sector focused on minimising waste, increasing recycling, and reducing environmental impact. This role offers a rewarding opportunity to learn about the industry, understand business financial incentives, and help future-proof waste management practices through effective regulation.
Training & Development
You will start at Staff Grade EOA and follow a structured development programme to progress to EOB grade within approximately 18 months. Initial training includes residential and e-learning courses, fieldwork shadowing, health and safety training, and learning to use EA systems. You will receive authorisation and a warrant for regulatory powers. Responding to incidents is a key part of the role, requiring availability outside normal hours, with full training and additional payment provided.
