About the Role
We are seeking a motivated Environmental Land Management Adviser to join the Surrey Hills National Landscape Team, hosted by Surrey County Council. You will lead the delivery of the Farming in Protected Landscapes (FiPL) programme across the Surrey Hills, aligning with the Surrey Hills National Landscape Management Plan 2025-30, the Local Nature Recovery Strategy (LNRS) for Surrey, and supporting Defra's 30by30 targets. Our team works flexibly from the National Trust Surrey Hills Estate Office at Box Hill.
You will engage confidently with farmers and land managers, providing advice, support, and facilitation to deliver projects under the FiPL themes of Climate, Nature, People, and Place. This role requires a diligent, organised, and enthusiastic individual with a strong understanding of farming and land management issues relevant to the Surrey Hills. You will work in partnership with a wide range of individuals and organisations and act as the first point of contact for the FiPL programme under the guidance of the Surrey Hills Programme Manager.
Responsibilities include providing regular monitoring and feedback on scheme progress to Defra. You should have credible knowledge of current farming issues, agri-environment schemes, nature recovery, land management, and countryside access. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required. Travel across the Surrey Hills and wider area is essential, so a full UK driving licence is required.
Our offer includes 26 days' holiday (rising to 28 days after 2 years and 31 days after 5 years), the option to buy up to 10 additional days, a generous local government pension, carer's leave, paid volunteering days, paternity, adoption and dependents leave, an Employee Assistance Programme, access to a learning and development hub, wellbeing and lifestyle discounts, and the opportunity to make a real difference to local communities.
Experience
- Demonstrable knowledge and understanding of sustainable farming practices and management of semi-natural habitats including heathland, chalk grassland, and woodland.
- Experience working with farmers and land managers, including negotiating and building trusted relationships.
- Experience supporting grant application processes.
- Experience of budget management and monitoring.
- Competent with digital (GIS) mapping.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
About you
You are motivated, organised, and enthusiastic with a keen interest in environmental land management and nature recovery. You have the confidence to engage collaboratively with farmers and land managers and the ability to work effectively in partnership with a wide range of stakeholders. You are willing and able to travel to sites across the Surrey Hills and wider area and can work occasional evenings and weekends as required.
Qualifications
A full UK driving licence is essential for this role. Relevant qualifications or experience in farming, land management, environmental science, or related fields are desirable but not explicitly stated.
