About the Role

As part of a growing and agile Environmental Planning team, we are seeking a Principal/Associate Technical Director with a strong track record in leading environmental and consenting aspects of projects, particularly within the Design and Build sector. Your expertise in environmental management, technical or sustainability disciplines will support projects involving protected species, pollution, surface water and materials management, air quality, or noise in some of the world's busiest and most beautiful locations.
You will work on a diverse range of projects including large-scale energy and infrastructure, rail, highways, water, mixed-use developments, public realm, and masterplanning schemes for both private and public clients. We promote technical excellence, flexibility, collaboration, and digital innovation to deliver multidisciplinary projects across the UK and worldwide.
Your responsibilities will include leading the coordination and delivery of planning and environmental work by multi-disciplinary teams, influencing project development to achieve optimal environmental and planning outcomes with a strong understanding of the Design & Build process. You will drive business development, create project opportunities, lead project delivery, and build our portfolio in the Design & Build sector while working closely with upstream Environmental and Planning teams.
Engaging with consultees, stakeholders, and key clients will be a key part of your role, alongside managing projects to ensure technical quality, commercial performance, and health and safety standards. You will collaborate closely with colleagues across Arcadis’ global business to deliver impactful sustainable solutions.
Experience
- Excellent working knowledge of environmental and consenting processes, including EIA practices, procedures, and relevant case law
- Strong understanding of environmental and sustainability principles and technical specialisms
- Proven experience working with contractors and influencing sustainability through design
- Experience across a range of project types including large-scale infrastructure and mixed-use developments
- Strong report writing, verbal communication, and presentation skills with experience reviewing others' work to ensure quality
- Demonstrated ability in multi-disciplinary coordination, project leadership, and project management
- Experience consulting and negotiating with planning authorities, regulators, and stakeholders
- Commercial expertise including forecasting, project management, and quality assurance
